Date of Presidential Election Set in Belarus

The election of the President of the Republic of Belarus will be held on 26 January 2025. The decision was taken today at the session of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus.
Speaking at the session, Chair of the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Belarus Igor Karpenko noted that the constitutional referendum of 2022 marked the beginning of a large-scale political modernization of the country.
He said that the adjustment of the Constitution entailed the need to amend a number of normative legal acts, including the Electoral Code. The powers of the state authorities have been redistributed, the conditions and requirements for nominating candidates for elected positions have been changed, and the norms aimed at ensuring electoral sovereignty have been enshrined.
Parliament and local councils of deputies had been formed on the basis of the amended legislation, election of delegates to the All-Belarusian People’s Assembly had been held, which had started its work in the constitutional status, the CEC Chair said.
He added that the CEC was ready for the start of the election campaign. Draft methodological recommendations for territorial and precinct commissions, calendar plan of events, handbooks for national and international observers had been developed.
