International Videoconference Discussed Role of Parliamentarians in Fight Against Terrorism Under Pandemic

On 30 June, on the International Day of Parliamentarism, the IPA CIS partners – the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly and the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism – organized an online meeting on the role of parliamentarians in the fight against terrorism under COVID-19 pandemic.

The purpose of the webinar was to enhance cooperation in response to the continuing threat of terrorism and extremism amid the crisis all countries faced.

Secretary of the Joint Commission at the IPA CIS for the Harmonization of National Laws Related to Security, Countering Emerging Threats and Challenges Stanislav Korostelyov and Secretary of the IPA CIS Permanent Commission on Political Issues and International Cooperation Maksimillian Selyutin represented the IPA CIS Council Secretariat as observers on the webinar.

The event was moderated by Secretary General of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Roberto Montella, Chair of the PAM Special Parliamentary Committee on Counterterrorism Gennaro Migliore and Deputy Director of UNCCT and Chief of Special Projects and Innovation Branch of UNOCT Mauro Miedico.

MPs discussed how crisis, in particular COVID-19 pandemic, could exacerbate terrorist threats as states’ focus and assets have been diverted towards fighting the pandemic.

The event allowed representatives of more than 65 national parliaments to participate in the discussion on developing a common approach to security, as well as exchanging views on counter-terrorism measures at the current and future stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
