Speakers of CIS Parliaments to Gather in St. Petersburg

On 17–18 April, the spring session of the IPA CIS will be held at the Tavricheskiy Palace in St. Petersburg. The events will be chaired by Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko.

The meeting is expected to be attended by Chair of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan Sahiba Gafarova, Chair of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Alen Simonyan, Chair of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Natalia Kochanova, Chair of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan Maulen Ashimbayev, Chair of the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic Nurlanbek Turgunbek, Chair of the Majlisi Milli of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan Rustami Emomali, and Chair of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbayeva.

First Deputy Chair of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Ivan Melnikov, Chair of the Committee of the Majilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan on International Affairs, Defense and Security Aigul Kuspan and CIS Secretary General Sergey Lebedev plan to participate in the work of the Council.

The agenda includes discussions on the IPA CIS international election observation missions in Belarus and Tajikistan, review of the Regulations on the International Competition for Graduation Projects, and a summary of the Assembly’s 2024 activities.

That same day, the international conference “Legislative regulation of measures to counter the use of artificial intelligence and other new technologies for terrorist activities” will be held, co-organized by the IPA CIS, the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The IPA CIS Permanent Commissions will meet to discuss legal harmonization in the field of security, defense, and political cooperation.

On 18 April, participants will take part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Piskaryovskoye Memorial Cemetery and attend the 58th plenary session of the IPA CIS. A ceremonial meeting dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War will also take place.
