2 February is Day of Victory in Battle of Stalingrad

The Battle of Stalingrad, one of the largest battles of the Second World War, was ended on 2 February, 1943.

Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko sent a congratulatory message on the occasion of the memorable date.

The whole country fought for Stalingrad, which was practically wiped off the face of the earth, in 1943. For the whole world, the Battle of Stalingrad is a symbol of the spiritual power and unity of the Soviet people in the fight against the invaders, said the Speaker of the Federation Council.

On this memorable day, mourning and solemn events are held in Volgograd, attended by citizens of the Commonwealth countries. They lay flowers at the Eternal Flame on the Mamaev Kurgan, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Small Brethren’s Tomb, and at the steles dedicated to the courage and heroism of the natives of the Soviet republics who died heroically in the Battle of Stalingrad.
