Issues of Combating Human Trafficking During Pandemic Discussed in Republic of Uzbekistan

29 July 2020, the National Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Combating Human Trafficking and Forced Labor, the Academy of General Prosecutor’s Office, the National Center for Human Rights, OSCE Project Coordinator in Uzbekistan and UN Office for Drugs and Crime co-organized the international roundtable “Countering Human Trafficking during COVID-19 Pandemic”.

The event was held via video-conferencing and brought together specialists and experts in the field of combating human trafficking and forced labor from more than 50 public authorities, NGOs and international organizations.

Speaker of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Chair of the National Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Combating Human Trafficking and Forced Labor Tanzila Narbaeva welcomed the participants and stressed the measures taken in this area, as well as the existing problems and prospects.

The World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is widely celebrated on 30 July.

The roundtable was focused on the issues of the improvement of national legislation in the field of countering human trafficking, based on the international standards, development of a national mechanism of identification of victims of trafficking in persons, ensuring the inevitability of punishment for such crimes, advanced professional training of specialists.

The participants also discussed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the situation of human trafficking and the emergence of new kinds of such crimes. The speakers from among the representatives of international organizations noted that there was the need to join efforts to counter this problem during the pandemic because of the great importance for the individual and public safety.
