Law on Countering Extremist Activity Adopted in Kyrgyzstan

On 12 January, at a meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic, MPs approved the draft Law on Countering Extremist Activity.

The document introduces new concepts: extremist activity, extremist organization, prevention of extremist activity, countering extremist activity and warning.

The law determines competencies of public authorities in countering extremist activity. The internal affairs bodies of the Kyrgyz Republic are authorized to implement a unified state policy in the field of countering extremist activity. In addition, the law defines the procedure for recognizing extremist information materials, legal entities and organizations, their attributes and symbols. All the provisions of the draft are brought into line with the revised criminal codes, as well as with the Convention of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization on Countering Extremism.

MPs also adopted amendments to the Code of Offenses of the Kyrgyz Republic, establishing responsibility for disrespectful attitude to teaching staff, expressed in the form of insults, strong language, indecent behavior, harassment and demonstration of obscene gestures (signs), objects.
