New Constitution of Uzbekistan: 65% of Fundamental Law is Renewed

On 9 March, the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan discussed planned amendments to the Constitution of the country. Proposals include expansion of the powers of MPs, increase the number of provisions protecting human rights and freedoms, and reduce restrictions on participation in elections. In general, 65% of the country's fundamental law text is renewed.
Jakhongir Shirinov, the member of the Oliy Majlis, noted that the number of articles in the Constitution could increase from the current 128 to 155.
In particular, the changes will affect obligations of the Legislative Chamber and the Senate, functions of the Parliament, the number of MPs. Other changes will consolidate democratic norms and standards.
