Republic of Belarus Celebrates National Unity Day
17 September 2024
The National Unity Day of the Republic of Belarus is a national holiday celebrated annually in the country on 17 September. It was established on 7 June 2021 by Decree No. 206 of President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko. The holiday is dedicated to the anniversary of the Polish campaign of the Red Army, which began on 17 September 1939. As a result of the campaign, Western Belarus was united with the Belarusian SSR and the majority of Belarusians were reunited in one state.
The decree says: “This day became an act of historical justice towards the Belarusian people, divided against their will in 1921 under the terms of the Treaty of Riga, and is forever entrenched in the national historical tradition.”
The National Unity Day symbolizes the value of freedom and independence.
