Sahiba Gafarova Elected Speaker of Milli Majlis of Republic of Azerbaijan

The first meeting of Milli Majlis of the VII convocation was held today, during which the MPs decided a number of organisational issues.
Sahiba Gafarova was elected Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament. She was nominated by the ruling New Azerbaijan Party.
Sahiba Gafarova is the first woman in the history of Azerbaijan to become Speaker of the Parliament. She was elected in March 2020 and served as Speaker of the Milli Majlis of the VI convocation.
Deputy Ali Ahmadov was elected First Deputy Speaker of the Milli Majlis, MPs Ziyafat Asgarov, Musa Gasimli and Rafael Huseynov were elected Deputy Speakers.
The meeting also approved candidates for chairs of the committees of the Azerbaijani parliament.
The Plenum of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Azerbaijan approved the results of the snap election to Milli Majlis held on 1 September. The IPA CIS International observers took part in monitoring the election.
