The 30th of June — the International day of Parliamentarianism
30 June 2019
The Interparliamentary Assembly of CIS Member Nations was the founder of this holiday.
In the spring of 2017, during the session dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the organization, the IPA CIS Council decided to apply to the Interparliamentary Union with the initiative of establishing this holiday.
The Interparliamentary Union positively assessed the initiative, included the relevant paragraph in the text of the resolution adopted by the 137th IPU Assembly in St. Petersburg on 18 October 2017, and appealed to the United Nations.
On 22 May 2018 in New-York, the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly adopted by consensus the resolution A/RES/72/278 “Interaction between the United Nations, national parliaments an the Inter-Parliamentary Union”. The resolution confirms the join initiative by the IPA CIS and the IPU on establishing 30 June as the International Day of Parliamentarism.
The day was not chosen by chance. On 30 June 1889, the first international conference of the Interparliamentary Union - the largest and oldest Association of parliamentarians in the world, which is now 130 years old, was held in Paris, and this date became the starting point of the history of International parliamentarism.
