Geography: located in Middle Asia fringed by the Caspian Sea, the Urals, Siberia and Central Asia. Westernmost provinces beyond river Emba extend into Europe. Borders Russia on the north and west, China on the east, Turkmenistan to the south.

Senate
Established on 30 August 1995 following national constitutional referendum. The Constitution established a bicameral national Parliament consisting of two Chambers: the Senate and the Mazhilis.
Seats: 50
Mandate: MPs are elected for six-year terms. The Senate is formed by deputies representing two persons from each oblast, city of republican significance and the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The members of the Senate are elected at a meeting of electors - members of local bodies of representative power.
Ten members of the Senate are appointed by the President of the Republic, five of whom shall be appointed on the proposal of the Assembly of people of Kazakhstan.
Half of the elected members of the Senate are re-elected every three years.

Established on 30 August 1995 following national constitutional referendum. The Constitution established a bicameral national Parliament with the Mazhilis as the lower chamber.

Mandate: MPs are elected for a term of five years by a mixed electoral system: by a system of proportional representation on the territory of a single national constituency, as well as by single mandate territorial constituencies.
