About 150 CIS Observers to Work at Parliamentary Election in Azerbaijan

The IPA CIS Observer Mission started long-term monitoring of the snap parliamentary election in the Republic of Azerbaijan. On 13 August, Chair of the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mazahir Panahov met with Deputy Secretary General of the CIS Nurlan Seytimov in Baku.

Nurlan Seytimov said that a total of about 150 people will work in the CIS Observer Mission for the election to Milli Majlis. Some of them will conduct long-term monitoring of the parliamentary election. The most important components of the observation process will be personal meetings with the leadership of political parties, candidates, members of election commissions and representatives of the media.

Mazahir Panahov also spoke about the high interest in the elections among political parties. Out of the 26 registered parties, 25 have nominated their candidates for parliamentary seats. As for today, a total of 1,008 people are running for 125 parliamentary seats.

The IPA CIS international observers working as part of the CIS Observer Mission, as part of their long-term monitoring, had earlier held a number of online meetings with representatives of the campaign headquarters of the parties nominating candidates for the parliamentary election to Milli Majlis.

The IPA CIS IIMDD expert group at the stage of long-term monitoring analyses the compliance of national legislation with international standards and the obligations of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the electoral sphere.

In accordance with the invitation of Speaker of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan Sahiba Gafarova, the IPA CIS international observers are taking part in monitoring the parliamentary elections scheduled for 1 September 2024. First Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Andrey Yatskin was appointed as the coordinator of the group formed from representatives of the parliaments of the IPA CIS Member Nations, staff members of the Assembly and the IPA CIS IIMDD experts.
