Countries Commonwealth Develop Unified Strategy for Prevention and Treatment Diabetes

A meeting of the CIS Expert Council on Diabetes was held in Minsk.

Representatives of Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan took part in the meeting, along with delegates from the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS, the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe, and the CIS Executive Committee.

The main topic of the meeting was the draft Programme of Cooperation of CIS Member Nations on the prevention and treatment of diabetes for 2027–2030.

Experts discussed approaches to ensuring early detection and modern treatment methods for patients with diabetes in order to achieve the highest possible quality and life expectancy. The draft document proposes including a set of measures aimed at prevention, identification of risk factors — including excess body weight — and early diagnosis of diabetes.

All measures are aimed at reducing overall mortality among patients with diabetes, lowering mortality rates among patients aged 30–70, and decreasing the incidence of cardiovascular diseases associated with the condition.

It was noted that the draft document takes into account the experience of Commonwealth countries in preventing and treating diabetes.

One of the Programme’s implementers is the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS, represented at the meeting by Secretary of the IPA CIS Permanent Commission on Social Policy and Human Rights, Executive Secretary of the IPA CIS Expert Advisory Board on Public Health
Evgenia Vladimirova.

Also participating in the meeting was member of the IPA CIS Expert Advisory Board on Public Health, Chair of the St. Petersburg Diabetes Society Marina Shipulina. She noted that the foundation for developing the first Programme of Cooperation of CIS Member Nations on the prevention and treatment of diabetes was the Agreement on Cooperation of CIS Member Nations in combating the increase in diabetes incidence, signed by the heads of government on 14 November 2008.

The next meeting of the Expert Council will take place in June, where participants are expected to finalize the draft Programme and the Unified Minimum List, as well as analyze the availability of modern insulin across CIS countries.
