United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy Discussed with MPs

On 30 June 2021, an online discussion “Mainstreaming Counter-Terrorism Responses Across Parliamentary Functions” was held in New York, co-organized by the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) and the Shura Council of State of Qatar and co-sponsored by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations.

The event was attended by representatives of UN Member Nations, heads of counter-terrorism agencies, MPs, parliamentary assemblies, United Nations entities and other international and regional organizations.

Welcoming remarks were made by President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Duarte Pacheco, Speaker of the National Council of the Republic of Austria Wolfgang Sobotka and Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Djibouti Mohamed Ali Houmed.

On behalf of the Secretariat of the Council of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, Secretary of the IPA CIS Permanent Commission on Political Issues and International Cooperation Maksimillian Selyutin and Secretary of the Joint Commission at the IPA CIS for the Harmonization of National Laws Related to Security, Countering Emerging Threats and Challenges Stanislav Korostelev took part in the event as observers.

The discussion provided an opportunity to raise awareness about the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy among parliamentarians, highlight the critical parliamentary role in its implementation and present the “Parliamentary Guide to Facilitate the Implementation of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy”, drafted by the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism.
