Constitutional Commission Suggests Increasing Tenure of Parliament of Republic of Belarus From Four to Five Years

On 21 July 2021, the ninth meeting of the Constitutional Commission took place in Minsk. The meeting was attended by Speaker of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Natalya Kochanova, Chair of the Standing Committee of the Council of the Republic on Legislation and State Building Sergey Sivts, members of the Council of the Republic Oleg Rummo and Natalia Yakubitskaya, and Chair of the Youth Council (parliament) at the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Egor Makarevich.

The meeting discussed the proposals to amend the Constitution. In particular, it is proposed to increase the term of office of the Parliament from four to five years and change the procedure for holding parliamentary sessions - one session from September to June during the year.

On 22 July, the proposals of the Constitutional Commission will be sent to the President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, which will be followed by the meeting of the Commission with the participation of the President. The meeting will consider the conceptual comments to the proposals.

The final version of the draft amended Constitution will be submitted for national discussion and then for a republican referendum.
