International Day for Monuments and Sites Celebrated Today

The International Day of Monuments and Sites is celebrated on 18 April. The event was established in 1982 by International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) under the patronage of UNESCO.

The Day is intended to draw attention to the uniqueness and value of the architectural monuments, historic sites, landscapes, and other object that are witnesses of the past and help to preserve national and world cultural identity.

This year Tavricheskiy Palace celebrated its 235th anniversary. The headquarters of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly is a unique monument of architecture, history and culture. The palace’s past is rich in events. Built for Grigoriy Potemkin, it became an imperial residence in 1792, and was the seat of the State Duma of the Russian Empire from 1906 to 1917.
