Experts Discussed Impact of COVID-19 and HIV on SDGs Implementation

The international virtual Symposium “Impact of COVID-19 and HIV on Implementation of  Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3.3.”, co-organized by the Russian Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing (Rospotrebnadzor) and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS).

The event brought together more than 600 participants from 26 countries – the representatives of public authorities, medical institutions, academia, international and civil society organizations and business community. Head of Rospotrebnadzor, Chief State Sanitary Physician of the Russian Federation Anna Popova, UNAIDS Executive Director Winnie Byanyima, Director of the WHO Regional Office for Europe Hans Kluge and other experts participated in the discussion. Secretary of the IPA CIS Permanent Commission on Social Policy and Human Rights, Executive Secretary of the IPA CIS Board of Experts on Public Health Evgenia Vladimirova represented the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly at the meeting.

The event is held in the framework of the preparation for the International Forum “Implementation of the SDGs in Fight Against Epidemic” to be held in Moscow on 27-28 October 2020.

The symposium aims to assess the risks of the coronavirus pandemic for the global health care. The participants discussed the impact of the pandemic on the resources, deliveries, logistical schemes, movement of people, aid organization, including with the participation of the civil society organizations, carrying out scientific research not related to COVID-19. According to the experts, the fight against new coronavirus demanded significant distraction of resources from the HIV/AIDS and other diseases. At the same time, it has proved that the existing sustainable systems and networks for countering infectious diseases helps prepare effective and fast response to the pandemic.
