Valentina Matvienko: Issues of Mandatory Plastic Recycling To Be Brought for Discussion at 9th Nevsky Ecological Congress

Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council Valentina Matvienko told the journalists that the issues of mandatory plastic recycling would be brought for discussion at the Ninth Nevsky Ecological Congress.

This topic was raised in connection with the initiative of Deputy Chairperson of the Government of the Russian Federation Viktoria Abramchenko to prohibit the use of plastic cocktail straws, colored plastic, disposable tableware and other products, which are difficult to recycle into secondary material resources.

Valentina Matvienko supported the proposal of the Deputy Prime Minister and said that it was time to produce packaging from recycled raw materials. She noted the need to develop a roadmap with clear deadline, when the production of non-recycled plastic would be stopped, so that businesses and enterprises could switch to recycled raw materials.

Within the Nevsky Ecological Congress specialists and experts, representatives of foreign countries will discuss the issue, consider the ways of solving the problem and the mechanisms of implementation of this initiative.

The Ninth Nevsky International Ecological Congress will take place on 27-28 May 2021 in the Tavricheskiy Palace – the headquarters of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly. The overall topic of the event will be “Ecology of the Planet – Sustainable Development”.
