Long-Term Monitoring of Parliamentary Elections Underway in Almaty
05 August 2026

The IPA CIS international observers continue their work in Kazakhstan as part of the long-term monitoring of the elections to the Kurultai.
On 5 August, the observers met with the Almaty Territorial Election Commission to discuss in detail the formation and training of election commissions at various levels. The training is conducted in three stages using a cascade approach. The second stage, involving chairs, deputy chairs and secretaries of precinct election commissions, is currently nearing completion.
Almaty has 1 329 251 registered voters and 670 polling stations, including 73 located at temporary places of residence. At 41 polling stations, citizens without permanent registration will be able to obtain one-day registration to cast their votes.
Chair of the Almaty Territorial Election Commission Aigul Kalykova briefed the international observers on methods used to inform voters, including door-to-door visits by members of precinct election commissions, numerous electronic services and a permanent call centre. Her position is confirmed by the Central Election Commission of Kazakhstan.
The observers were also presented with materials on young voter clubs operating at city and district levels in Almaty. During the election campaign, 400 club activists are involved in informing citizens.
The international observers also visited polling stations across the city.
The elections to Kazakhstan’s new unicameral parliament are scheduled for 23 August 2026.
