Ceremony in Honor of 81st Anniversary of Leningrad’s Liberation from Blockade held at Piskariovskoye Memorial

On the day of the 81st anniversary of the complete liberation of Leningrad from the Nazi blockade, a solemn mourning ceremony was held at the Piskariovskoye Memorial Cemetery. Russian parliamentarians, war veterans, siege survivors, representatives of delegations of CIS countries and other states, representatives of authorities of a number of Russian regions, public organizations and citizens came to commemorate the memory of the residents and defenders of the unconquered city.

Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko laid flowers at the Motherland monument.

She expressed words of deepest gratitude to all the living defenders, residents of the besieged city, and also paid tribute to those who are no longer alive, who defended Leningrad and died, having taken on the heaviest inhuman trials.

“The complete liberation of Leningrad from the Nazi blockade was a pivotal event in the history of the Great Patriotic War. And I think there is some symbolism in the fact that a series of events dedicated to our Great Victory, we open solemnly at the largest in Europe fraternal burial place of war victims - at the Piskariovskoye Memorial Cemetery,” - said the Speaker.

A delegation from the IPA CIS took part in the solemn mourning ceremony. The delegation included Deputy Secretary General of the IPA CIS Council – Plenipotentiary Representative of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Hyak Chilingaryan, Deputy Head of the IPA CIS Council Secretariat Sergey Kurdin, Deputy Head of the IPA CIS Council Secretariat Alexey Dolzhikov, and other staff members of the Secretariat.

The representatives of the delegation from the Assembly paid tribute to all the war heroes from the former Soviet republics who liberated Leningrad.
