International Day of Parliamentarism Celebrated Today

The International Day of Parliamentarism, observed annually on 30 June, was established following an initiative of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly.

In spring 2017, during the Assembly’s jubilee session marking its 25th anniversary, the IPA CIS Council proposed that the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) establish an international day dedicated to parliamentarism.

The initiative gained broad support and was incorporated into the resolution adopted at the 137th IPU Assembly, held in St. Petersburg on 18 October 2017. The IPU subsequently submitted the proposal to the United Nations for consideration.

On 22 May 2018, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution Interaction between the United Nations, National Parliaments and the Inter-Parliamentary Union, endorsing the joint initiative of the IPA CIS and the IPU to establish the International Day of Parliamentarism.

The date of 30 June commemorates the first Inter-Parliamentary Conference, held in Paris in 1889, which marked the beginning of the institutionalized international parliamentary cooperation.

Today, the International Day of Parliamentarism serves as an opportunity to highlight the vital role of parliaments in promoting democracy, representing citizens and advancing international dialogue and cooperation.
