International Environmental Conference Highlights Role of Cooperation Between CIS Experts

The Third International Research and Practical Conference “BRICS Regional Cooperation: Modern Environmental and Nature Management Issues” was held in Petrozavodsk on 15–17 September 2026 as part of the International Academic Forum “Science Without Borders: Interdisciplinary Scientific Cooperation”.

The Forum was organised by the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, the Government of the Republic of Karelia and the National Committee on BRICS Research.

The opening ceremony was attended by Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Chair of the IPA CIS Expert Advisory Board on Ecology and Environmental Management, Stepan Kalmykov, Acting Director General of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences Olga Bakhmet, as well as leading scientists, academics and experts from Armenia, Belarus, Russia, China, India, Brazil and other countries.

The key topic of the conference was the development of international and regional cooperation in ecology and sustainable environmental management.

Secretary of the IPA CIS Permanent Commission on Agrarian Policy, Natural Resources and Ecology Natalia Amburtseva took part in the conference. She emphasised the importance of active cooperation with the expert community across the CIS in preparations for the Third International Forum “Sustainable Development of Mountain Territories”.

During the plenary sessions and five thematic sections, experts discussed the conservation of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, biodiversity monitoring, forest carbon balance and water quality. They also addressed soil pollution, land reclamation, the use of nanotechnology and artificial intelligence in environmental assessment, as well as the green economy, bioeconomy and cooperation between science, business and government in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
