St. Petersburg Commemorates Victims of Great Patriotic War

A solemn-mourning and flower-laying ceremony was held at the Piskaryovskoye Memorial Cemetery in St. Petersburg.
The ceremony was attended by Secretary General of the IPA CIS Council Dmitriy Kobitskiy, Deputy Secretaries General, Plenipotentiary Representative of the Parliaments of Belarus — Sergey Khomenko, Kazakhstan — Ashat Mukashev, and Kyrgyzstan — Nurbek Satvaldiev, as well as Deputy Heads of the Secretariat Sergey Kurdin and Alexey Dolzhikov.
Representatives of the Assembly laid flowers at the foot of the Mother Motherland and at all the memorial plaques dedicated to natives of the former Soviet republics who fell in the battles for Leningrad.
The event was dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War.
The Piskaryovskoye Memorial is the world’s largest burial site for victims of the Second World War. Its 186 mass graves and 6,000 individual military burial sites hold the remains of 420,000 residents of besieged Leningrad who died from hunger, cold, and bombing, as well as 70,000 soldiers who defended the city.
