Topical Issues of Climate Change Discussed at X Nevsky International Ecological Congress

On 25 May, the roundtable “Climate: New Challenges of the Century” was held at the IPA CIS headquarters, in the Tavricheskiy Palace. The discussion was devoted to adaptation to global environmental changes, the interaction of government, business and society, prospects and issues of environmental, social and corporate governance development in states.

The event was moderated by Chair of the Committee of the Majlisi namoyandagon of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan on Agrarian Issues, Land and Water Resources Rustam Latifzoda and Deputy of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Fetisov.

Member of the Committee of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation on Agriculture and Food Policy and Environmental Management Gennadiy Ordenov presented a report on the environmental protection policy.

Director of the Department of International Cooperation and Climate Change of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation Ivan Kushch spoke about increasing the absorption capacity of forest.

Representative of the Mayor of Belém (Federative Republic of Brazil), Municipal Secretary of Climate Change, Special Assistant for the organization of the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference Sergio Brazao and Silva focused the audience on implementation of environmental project in the Amazon region.

Director of the Regional Mountain Center of Central Asia (RGCCA) Ismail Dairov spoke about the main problems of climate change and drew attention to the lack of connection between academic, political, legal and finance aspects.

Director of the Center for the Study of Glaciers of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan Abdulkhamid Kayumov told about the country’s contribution to the study of glaciers and programs to address their degradation.

Minister of the Environment of the Republic of Iraq Nizar Mohammed Saeed declared that political reality and military conflicts have made Iraq the most affected country by climate change. 

First Deputy General Director and Director of the Development and International Business Unit of the State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM Kirill Komarov talked about the important role of atomic energy in the climate agenda of the Russian Federation.

Director of the Competition, Energy Efficiency and Ecology Department of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation Irina Petrunina presented information about the Federal Law on Limiting Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

Deputy Secretary General of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization Dimitrios Rallis said that climate change is a global problem that requires joint efforts of international organizations.

Permanent Representative of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) to the President of the Russian Federation – First Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) Andrey Fedotov shared the region’s experience in studying climate change and deglaciation.

MPs, representatives of relevant ministries, international organizations, Russian and foreign representatives of academia and business took part in the roundtable.

The organizers of the 10th Anniversary Nevsky International Ecological Congress were the Government of the Russian Federation, the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, the IPA CIS and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation.
