Turkmenistan Celebrates Independence Day
27 September 2026

In 2026, Turkmenistan marks the 35th anniversary of the proclamation of its independence.
On 27 October 1991, the Supreme Council of the Turkmen SSR adopted the Constitutional Law “On the Independence and Foundations of the State Structure of Turkmenistan”. The document proclaimed Turkmenistan an independent democratic state.
Initially, the holiday was celebrated on 27–28 October. In 2018, a decision of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan moved the celebration to 27 September.
The main celebrations take place in Ashgabat. The programme traditionally includes a wreath-laying ceremony at the Independence Monument, concerts, awards for distinguished figures of the country and festive events.
