CIS Observer Mission Recognized Elections of President of Azerbaijan as Free and Competitive

Speaker of the Milli Majlis of the Azerbaijan Republic Sahiba Gafarova met with colleagues from the parliaments of the Commonwealth countries who arrived as the IPA CIS international observers for the presidential election in Azerbaijan.

Sahiba Gafarova highly appreciated the work of the IPA CIS observers and cooperation of MPs within the organization as a whole. Coordinator of the group, Deputy Speaker of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan Zhakip Asanov told about the composition of the monitoring group, which included representatives of different countries and experts. They conducted long-term and short-term monitoring, meeting with representatives of political parties and other election participants. Secretary General of the IPA CIS Council Dmitriy Kobitskiy expressed his gratitude to the Speaker of the Milli Majlis for the opportunity to participate in monitoring the elections and expressed his hope for the future development of Azerbaijan.

A press conference of the CIS Observer Mission for the Presidential Elections of the Republic of Azerbaijan was held in Baku to summarize the results of the election campaign. Head of the Mission, CIS Secretary General Sergey Lebedev noted high turnout and organization of work of election commissions.

Zhakip Asanov emphasized that their experts had time to analyze the electoral legislation of Azerbaijan on elections for a month and a half and made a conclusion on its compliance with the CIS Convention on Standards for Democratic Elections, other international documents.

On the election day, the IPA CIS observes visited 101 polling stations located in Baku and Apsheron district, as well as in diplomatic missions of the Azerbaijan Republic, the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Moldova, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Earlier, Chair of the Central Election Commission of Azerbaijan Mazahir Panahov announced the results of data received from 93.32% of polling stations. In the snap presidential election, current head of the state Ilham Aliyev won 4,281,625 votes (92.05%)
