30 June 2023
The International Day of Parliamentarism is celebrated on 30 June. Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko sent an address on the occasion.
She noted that this day was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations on the proposal of the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States, which was supported by the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
“The International Day of Parliamentarism is intended to recall the history of cooperation among legislators of different countries more than a century old. It was on 30 June 1889 that the Inter-Parliamentary Union was founded - the first international association of representatives of legislative bodies. Modern parliamentarians play a key role in overcoming economic inequities and the consequences of colonialism, preserving nature and the environment for future generations, protecting the rights of women, children and youth,” the Speaker of the Federation Council stressed.
