CEC of Belarus Confirms Compliance With International Standards by Using IPA CIS Model Documents to Update Electoral Legislation

The IPA CIS international observers met with Chair of the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Belarus Igor Karpenko as part of the monitoring of the parliamentary elections.

Coordinator of the group, Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Konstantin Kosachev stressed that the monitoring of the parliamentary elections would be carried out “as representatively as possible”.

Konstantin Kosachev said that the expert group of the IPA CIS IIMDD analyzed the legislation of the Republic of Belarus regulating the conduct of elections for its compliance with international electoral standards, and also studied the activities of the organizers and participants in the election process. The conclusion and report on long-term monitoring were handed over to the head of the CEC of Belarus.

More than 45.5 thousand national voters will work at the elections, information from them will flock to the Center for Public Election Observation.

Also, 294 international observers were accredited: representatives of the CIS and the SCO, independent experts from a number of countries in Europe and Asia.

The IPA CIS observers held the meeting with Speaker of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Natalya Kochanova.

The parties discussed the features of the current electoral campaign, political reforms in Belarus, the interaction of parliamentarians of the CIS countries for the sake of well-being and development in the region.

Natalia Kochanova stressed that during updating the electoral legislation in Belarus, the model documents of the IPA CIS, as well as the norms of the CIS Convention on the Standards of Democratic Elections were taken into account.
