National Flag Day Celebrated in Kyrgyz Republic

Every year on 3 March, the Kyrgyz Republic celebrates the Day of the State Flag. The holiday was established by the Decree of the President No. 270 on the National Flag of the Kyrgyz Republic of 10 June 2009 in order to to bring up patriotism and respect for the national symbols among the citizens .

The date was not chosen by chance: on 3 March 1992 the national flag was approved by the Supreme Council of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan. The first flag of independent Kyrgyzstan was raised on 5 March 1992 over the Government House in Bishkek.

The national flag of the Kyrgyz Republic is a red cloth, in the center of which there is a round solar disk emitting forty evenly divergent golden  rays. Inside the solar disk a tundyuk Kyrgyz yurt is depicted in red. The red color of the flag symbolizes valor and courage, the golden sun bathing in its rays embodies peace and wealth, and the tyundyuk is a symbol of the father's house, in a broader sense - the world as the universe. 40 rays united in a circle mean the unification of 40 ancient tribes into a single Kyrgyzstan.

At the end of 2023, deputies of the Kyrgyz Parliament supported the proposal to partially change the drawing of the national flag. 59 deputies voted in favor of changing the pattern of the national flag.

The initiative to change the pattern of the national flag was made by Speaker of the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic Nurlanbek Shakiev. President of the country Sadyr Zhaparov assured that he suggested the Speaker to change the flag.

In the new version of the state flag 40 sun rays have a straight shape.
