Parliamentarians to Prepare Legislative Initiatives Following Forum of Women of North

On 7 June, a regular meeting of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation took place.

Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Galina Karelova spoke about the first Forum of Women of the North, which was held from 5 to 7 June at the IPA CIS headquarters. “Based on the results of the forum, recommendations have been prepared. Among them are to develop the program “Health of Women of the North”, the project to support women’s entrepreneurship, to start the implementation of the educational program “Women Leaders of the Northern Territories”, as well as to take measures to provide social support of nomadic families. I would like to emphasize the high activity of the Forum participants and their willingness to develop their regions”, said Galina Karelova.

Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko noted that the Forum raised topical issues of the indigenous peoples.

The MPs approved the law according to which the children of nomads will be able to study next to their families. On 1 March 2024, the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation will be authorized to establish the specifics of obtaining pre-school and primary general education for children of indigenous small-numbered peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East in their traditional places of residence and traditional economic activity.
