Election silence in the Republic of Kazakhstan

Parliamentary elections will take place in the Republic of Kazakhstan on 20 March. The election silence banning political campaigning was declared the day before the election. The voters can use this moment to reflect on their electoral preferences.

According to the legislation, all electoral campaigns that kicked off on 20 February 2016, must be stopped the day before the election.

According to the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Majilis of the Parliament comprises 107 MPs elected for a 5-year term, 98 through general elections, with 9 of them elected by the Assembly of Kazakhstani Nation.

People of at least 25 years of age are eligible to run for MP office. The candidate must be a citizen of the Republic of Kazakhstan residing in Kazakhstan for not less than 10 years prior to the election.

According to the election legislation, the citizens who are abroad on the Election Day may vote on the pollinig stations arranged by diplomatic missions of the Republic of Kazakhstan. 65 polling stations in 51 countries will be open on 20 March 2016.

Six parties will struggle for the seats at the parliamentary election on 20 March 2016.

The IPA CIS observer team includes 42 international observers from 7 member states of the IPA CIS (the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Republic of Belarus, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Moldova, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Tajikistan).
