Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan
Foundation: On 8 December 1992, the 11th session of the Supreme Soviet of the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic adopted the Constitution of the country. On 23 September 1994, the 16th session of the Supreme Soviet adopted a resolution on holding the first elections to the Oliy Majlis on 25 December 1994. The elections, which were held in three rounds, resulted in the formation of a parliament of 245 members.
As a result of the constitutional referendum on 27 January 2002, the Oliy Majlis became bicameral.
The Senate is the upper house of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, which began its work in 2005 after the elections. It is the chamber of territorial representation. The term of office of the Senate is five years.

How is the Senate elected: four representatives from the Republic of Karakalpakstan are elected by secret ballot from the members of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Karakalpakstan (Jo‘korg‘i Kengesi), four persons each are elected from the regions of the republic and the city of Tashkent by secret ballot from among the members of the representative bodies of regions and cities.
Nine members of the Senate are appointed by the President from among the most respected citizens who have extensive practical experience and special merit in science, art, literature, production and other areas of State and public activity.
A citizen of Uzbekistan who has reached the age of 25 by election day and has permanently resided in the country for at least five years may be a member of the Senate. The President, who has resigned after the expiration of his term, has the right to serve as senator for life.

How is the Legislative Chamber elected: Members of the Legislative Chamber are elected on the basis of universal, equal and direct suffrage by secret ballot under a mixed system on a multi-party basis: 75 members are elected in single-mandate constituencies and 75 are elected on the basis of party lists in a single constituency.
Citizens who have reached the age of 25 by election day and have permanently resided in the Republic of Uzbekistan for at least five years have the right to be elected to the Legislative Chamber.
