Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan

As a result of the constitutional referendum on 27 January 2002, the Oliy Majlis became bicameral. The Senate is the upper house of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, which began its work in 2005 after the elections and the transition to a bicameral parliament.

Mandate: Senators are indirectly elected by an electoral college comprising members of local councils, with the country’s 14 regions consisting of 12 provinces plus the capital of Tashkent and the semi-autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan each electing senators to fill six seats. Senators serve 5-year terms. A citizen of Uzbekistan who has reached the age of 25 by election day and has been permanently residing in the country for at least five years can be a member of the Senate. The President, who has resigned after the expiration of his powers, has the right to serve as a senator for life.

Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan

Mandate: The Legislative Chamber has 150 members, 135 elected for a five-year term in single-seat constituencies using the two-round system and previously until the new president came to power, 15 seats were taken by the Ecological Movement of Uzbekistan. The current convocation consists of five factions of five political parties. Citizens who have reached the age of 25 by election day and have been permanently residing in the territory of the Republic of Uzbekistan for at least five years have the right to be elected to the Legislative Chamber.
