Kuryltai of the Republic of Kazakhstan

On 15 March 2026, the current Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan was adopted by a nationwide referendum. The Constitution designated the Kuryltai as the country’s highest representative body exercising legislative power.

The term of office of the Kuryltai begins upon the opening of its first session and ends with the opening of the first session of the Kuryltai of the new convocation.

The Kuryltai adopts constitutional laws, decides on matters of war and peace, calls elections of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, initiates the holding of a nationwide referendum, gives its consent by a majority vote to the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan for the appointment of the Vice-President, Prime Minister, judges of the Constitutional Court, members of the Central Election Commission and the Supreme Audit Chamber. Upon the nomination of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan the Kuryltai elects and removes from office judges of the Supreme Court, and exercises other powers vested in it by the Constitution.

Mandate: MPs are elected for a five-year term in accordance with the procedure established by constitutional law, under a system of proportional representation within a single nationwide electoral district.
