IIMDD IPA CIS experts arrive in Chisinau to assess preparation of elections to the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova

The program of a three-day visit, organized within the framework of the long-term monitoring mission, includes meetings with representatives of the Central Electoral Commission of the Republic of Moldova, monitoring of district electoral boards’ activities, visits to campaign headquarters of political parties. Experts plan to learn more about the preparation of the elections both in Chisinau and regions, in particular, in the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia.

On the arrival day, the observers met with CEC Chairperson Alina Russu, who informed them on the specifics of the current stage of administration of the elections, drawing particular attention to the innovations, driven by the recent amendments to the electoral legislation of the Republic of Moldova. Alina Russu also informed the observers on the current CEC activities, including the set-up of district electoral councils and precinct electoral bureaus, also for Moldovan citizens living on the left bank of the Dnestr and abroad. The CEC Chairperson also presented the results of nomination and registration of candidates' lists in the republican district and single-seat electoral districts.

Director of the IIMDD IPA CIS Dmitry Gladei informed the CEC Chairperson on the composition of the IPA CIS Observer Team for the elections on 24 February 2019, as well as on the activities in the framework of the long-term monitoring mission, and on the program of the current visit. He also focused on the issue of monitoring on the election day at “overseas” voting stations in the IPA CIS member nations.
