Valentina Matvienko: "The international community must create a united counter-terrorism front"

04 September 2017

Valentina Matvienko:

Experts believe that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations became one of the biggest challenges of global concern.

This problem is relevant not only in the CIS countries, but also in globally.

The CIS Interparliamentary Assembly is working to harmonize the legislation of the Commonwealth countries in the field of countering terrorism with a priority on the implementation of policies and programs that include:

·         The CIS Program of Cooperation in Combating Terrorism and Other Violent Forms of Extremism

·         The Intergovernmental Program of Joint Efforts to Combat Crime for 2014–2018

·         The CIS Cooperation Programs for Combating Illicit Trafficking in Drugs, Psychotropic Substances and their Precursors for 2014–2018

·         Countering Laundering of Criminal Assets, Financing Terrorism and Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction

The specific feature of IPA CIS long-term plans of model law-making is their open-ended character. The IPA CIS Council regularly amends documents based on proposals submitted by parliamentary delegations.

Yegor Stroyev, Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council from 1996 to 2001, who stood at the origins of the IPA CIS, noted that the IPA CIS was the first organization which decided to develop a unified concept for combating international terrorism.
