Convention on IPA CIS Signed 31 Years Ago

On 26 May 1995, the leaders of the CIS countries signed the Convention on the Interparliamentary Assembly of Member Nations of the Commonwealth of Independent States in Minsk. From that moment, the IPA CIS acquired the rights of an international organization.
The Convention established the status of the Interparliamentary Assembly as an independent interstate body of the Commonwealth of Independent States composed of parliamentary delegations from the Member Nations.
The document defines the key areas of the IPA CIS activities:
– the Assembly discusses issues of cooperation among the Member Nations in various fields and submits its Recommendations on these matters to the Council of the CIS Heads of State, the Council of the CIS Heads of Government and other CIS bodies;
– The Assembly considers issues referred to it by the Council of CIS Heads of State and the Council of CIS Heads of Government;
– The Assembly adopts Recommendations aimed at harmonizing the legislation of the Member Nations, develops Model Laws and submits them to national parliaments;
– The Assembly facilitates the exchange of legal information among the participating states, etc.
