Samarkand Declared Cultural Capital of Commonwealth

In 2024, Samarkand will have the status of the Cultural Capital of the Commonwealth by the decision of the Council of the CIS Heads of State. 

Samarkand is one of the oldest cities in the world and became the first capital of Soviet Uzbekistan in 1924.

In 2001, the historical part of Samarkand was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List under the title “Samarkand – Crossroads of Cultures”.
