27 April 2024
The Day of Parliamentarianism is celebrated today in Russia.
On 27 April 1906, the State Duma of the Russian Empire began its work — the first democratic institution in the country’s history, which laid the foundations of parliamentarism. All four convocations of the deputies of the Russian Empire met in the Tavricheskiy Palace, which is now the headquarters of the IPA CIS Member Nations.
Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council Valentina Matvienko congratulated colleagues on the Day of Russian Parliamentarism.
She pointed out that the holiday is an important reminder of the high role of legislative authorities in the life and fate of the country, in protecting its sovereignty and the interests of citizens.
The congratulations were sent by Speaker of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Vyacheslav Volodin.
The Day of Russian Parliamentarism was established in 2012 on the initiative of Valentina Matvienko and then Speaker of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Sergey Naryshkin.
This date was chosen in order to popularize the work of parliamentarians, to draw attention to the activities of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and the legislative bodies of the constituent entities.
