International Observers to Monitor Constitutional Referendum in Uzbekistan

Today, the Central Electoral Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan adopted provisions on the work of observers from foreign countries and international organizations as well as from political parties, self-government authorities and citizens’ initiative groups. It was noted that the activities of observers were important in ensuring the legitimacy, impartiality and transparency of voting.

The CEC also approved regulations on the procedure of organizing precinct referendum commissions at diplomatic and other representations of the Republic of Uzbekistan abroad.

The Commission also summed up the results of the CEC activities in the first half of 2022 and noted the improvement of the electoral legislation and electoral practice, expanding the range of cooperation with international organizations and electoral authorities of foreign countries, etc.

The constitutional referendum will become the main event of the second half of the year for the CEC. To remind, the vote on amendments to the Constitution will take place at the proposal of President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

According to him, the updated Constitution should create a solid legal basis and a reliable guarantee of long-term development strategies of the country. The key changes concern the assertion of the rights and interests of the individual, personal liberty, social obligations of the state, improvement of governance and strengthening of democracy.

The nationwide discussion of the draft Constitutional Law will last until 15 July 2022.
