Kassym-Jomart Tokayev: We Have to Significantly Strengthen Role of Parliament

On 16 March 2022, during a joint session of the chambers of the Parliament of Kazakhstan, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, delivered the Address to the people of the country “New Kazakhstan: the Path of Renewal and Modernization”.

In his speech, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev pointed out the importance of reviewing the powers of the President with the transition from a super-presidential to a presidential republic with a strong parliament. In addition, political reforms will affect the legislative branch, in particular, the formation procedure and of the mandate of the Senate will be revised.

According to the press service of the head of state, the program of political reforms also provides for the improvement of the electoral system, the modernization of the electoral process, and the expansion of opportunities for the development of the party system.

In general, the initiatives announced in the Address of the head of state are aimed at a significant transformation of the political system, the administrative and territorial structure of the country. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev also noted that more than 30 amendments would be made to the Constitution of the country.
