On 23 September 2020, the plenary session of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan presided by the head of the chamber Nurlan Nigmatulin adopted in the first reading with relevant amendments the draft Law on Combating Domestic Violence.

According to the press service of the chamber, the documents provide for the streamlining of legal mechanisms for the implementation of state policy in the field of combating domestic violence. In particular, they outline the information and educational work, provide for legal assistance, improvement of the qualifications of industry specialists in identifying and responding to facts of domestic violence, ensuring the availability of medical and social rehabilitation services.

Nurlan Nigmatulin agreed with the need to introduce the new mechanism and expressed hope that the proposed law would deprive the offender of the opportunity to evade fair punishment by intimidating the victim with subsequent reprisals.
