Speakers of Parliaments Discussed Role of Legislators in Strengthening Peace and Confidence Among Peoples

Today, the meeting of the Speakers of parliaments on the topic “Role of Parliamentarians in Strengthening International Peace and Confidence” was held via videoconferencing. The meeting was moderated by Speaker of the Mejlis of the Milli Gengesh of Turkmenistan Gulsat Mammedowa. The discussion brought together the Speakers of 15 countries, including the Azerbaijan Republic, the Republic of Armenia, the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the Republic of Belarus, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Republic of Tajikistan, the Republic of Turkey, the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Republic of Korea and Japan.

Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Chairperson of the IPA CIS Council Valentina Matvienko spoke at the event and noted the politicization of the pandemic and efforts to overcome it.

Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan said in his speech that it was on the initiative of Turkmenistan that the UN General Assembly  unanimously adopted the resolution “International Year of Peace and Trust, 2021”.

Speaker of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Vladimir Andreichenko stressed the importance of principles of openness, trust and solidarity, taking into account the positions of small and middle-size countries.

Deputy Speaker of the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic Aida Kasymalieva noted in her welcoming speech that the common history and unity of cultures provided a solid foundation for the future of our countries in further strengthening and enhancing mutually beneficial cooperation.

Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova Zinaida Greceanii highlighted that the experience of countering the COVID-19-related crisis had revealed an increased role of parliamentarism and told that thanks to cooperation and cohesion we could get herd immunity in every sense of the word.

On behalf of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, its Deputy Speaker Olga Timofeyeva addressed the meeting and said that the MPs had a particular role in providing a legal framework for countering sanctions, double standards and interference in the internal affairs.

Speaker of the Majlisi namoyandagon of the Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan Mahmadtoir Zokirzoda noted that in times of global instability Tajikistan stands for eliminating all threats to peace, global and regional security on the basis of multilateral approaches.

Speaker of Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbaeva noted that in the recent years the foreign policy of Uzbekistan had aimed at strengthening of friendship, mutual trust, good-neighborly relations and partnership with foreign countries and stressed the importance of parliamentary diplomacy for supporting efforts of the countries on developing interstate relations.

The participants adopted the joint statement, which calls for promotion of culture of peace and foster strengthening of peace and trust in relations between the countries.
