Tashkent Became First Youth Capital of Commonwealth

On April 15, Tashkent, capital of Uzbekistan, hosted opening ceremony of International project “CIS Youth Capital”. The heads of delegations of Uzbekistan, Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan took part in it.
Director of the Agency for Youth Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan Alisher Sadullayev and governor of Tashkent Shavkat Umurzakov addressed audience at Tashkent Palace of Youth Creativity.
Secretary General of the CIS Sergey Lebedev sent greetings to the participants of the ceremony. He stressed that Tashkent is first city of Commonwealth area to receive high status of CIS Youth Capital . And this choice is well deserved: almost half of urban population consists of citizens under age of 30. The city creates conditions for development and recreation of young population, it has repeatedly hosted major events with participation of young people.
Head of the CIS Executive Committee Department for Cooperation in the Field of Culture, Sport, Tourism and Youth, Deputy Head of the Secretariat of the CIS Council for Youth Affairs Tatyana Kovaleva presented the Khokim of capital with a certificate of awarding Tashkent a new status. Also on this day, opening of monument "Tashkent — youth capital of the CIS" and planting of trees by representatives of delegations took place.
Within framework of the project “CIS Youth Capital”, major events will be held in Tashkent, including a youth forum and a meeting of Youth Affairs Council.
CIS Youth Capital project is aimed at developing humanitarian cooperation in CIS region, improving mechanisms for working with youth and enhancing interaction between public associations of CIS countries. In 2025, Azerbaijani city of Gabala will become new youth capital of Commonwealth, and in 2026 this status will be transferred to the city of Kapan in Armenia.
The decision that Tashkent will become first youth capital of CIS was made in Sochi at a Meeting of the CIS Council of Heads of Government which took place in June last year.
