Sahiba Gafarova Elected New Speaker of Milli Mejlis of Azerbaijan Republic

During the meeting of the Milli Mejlis of the Azerbaijan Republic Sahiba Gafarova was elected the new Speaker of the parliament. She was nominated by ruling party “Yeni Azerbaijan” (New Azerbaijan), whose representatives received 70 out of 125 mandates following the results of the snap parliamentary elections.

Ali Huseynli was elected the First Vice-Speaker of the Milli Mejlis, whereas Adil Aliyev and Fazail Ibrahimli were elected Vice-Speakers of the Milli Mejlis.

Sahiba Gafarova was born on 19 March 1955. She graduated from M. F. Akhundov Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute of Russian Language and Literature (Baku Slavic University) and Azerbaijan University of Languages. She later taught at Baku Slavic University. Doctor of philology, professor, author of more than 70 scientific, educational and methodological works, programs and schoolbooks. She previously served as a member of the Milli Mejlis of the fourth and fifth convocations. She was part of the Azerbaijan Republic delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
