Armenian Сity of Gyumri Became Sports Capital of Commonwealth in 2024

Gyumri (Republic of Armenia) has been declared the Sports Capital of the Commonwealth in 2024 by the decision of the CIS Council of Foreign Affairs Ministers. A number of sporting and educational events are planned.

The status will allow the city to brightly reveal its sporting potential in the Commonwealth, expand opportunities for involving the population in physical culture and sports, attracting additional resources, including for infrastructural improvement.

Gyumri, the second largest city in Armenia, has traditionally made a great contribution to the sports life of the Republic. Many Armenian record holders, European, world and Olympic champions are from Gyumri.

The baton was passed on to Gyumri by Minsk, which held the status of Sports Capital of the Commonwealth in 2023.
