Implementation of Intergovernmental Program “Cultural Capitals of the Commonwealth” Continues

The CIS Executive Committee started work to define cities in which the “Cultural Capitals of the Commonwealth” Program will be implemented in 2022 and 2023.

In 2020, in accordance with the decision of the Council of the CIS Heads of State of 11 October 2017, the “Cultural Capitals of the Commonwealth” Program is implemented in Shymkent, the Republic of Kazakhstan. By the decision of the Council of the CIS Heads of State of 29 September 2018, Dushanbe will become the CIS Cultural Capital of 2021.

The Intergovernmental Program “Cultural Capitals of the Commonwealth” is implemented since 2011 and has been recognized as one of the CIS key humanitarian projects. The Program is aimed at creating equal opportunities, building up the cultural and humanitarian potential of the Commonwealth cities, helping to improve their infrastructure, enhancing cultural communications, preserving the historical and cultural heritage of the Commonwealth, respecting culture, languages, history and traditions of different nations.

The Program was already implemented in Gabala (2013) and Ganja (2017), the Azerbaijan Republic; Gyumri (2013) and Goris (2018), the Republic of Armenia; Gomel (2011), Mogilev (2013) and Brest (2019), the Republic of Belarus; Astana (2012) and Almaty (2014), the Republic of Kazakhstan; Osh (2014), the Kyrgyz Republic; Ulyanovsk (2011) and Voronezh (2015), the Russian Federation; Kulyab (2015), the Republic of Tajikistan; Mary (2012) and Dashogus (2016), Turkmenistan.
