Meeting of PA CSTO Standing Commission on Political Affairs and International Cooperation Held Via Videoconference

On 8 March 2020, the meeting participants of the PA CSTO Standing Commission on Political Affairs and International Cooperation discussed issues of current activities and future plans.

Chairman of the PA CSTO Standing Commission on Political Affairs and International Cooperation, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Alen Simonyan presided over the meeting. He informed the participants of the event about the outcome of the November (2019) session of the CSTO Collective Security Council, the situation in the area of the CSTO responsibility and the progress of ratification of international treaties concluded within the organization.

Executive Secretary of the PA CSTO Sergey Pospelov told about the results of the CSTO parliamentary delegations’ work at the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly winter meeting (20-21 February 2020, Vienna).

Commission member, First Deputy Chairman of the Committee of the State Duma on on Issues of the Commonwealth of Independent States and Contacts with Fellow Countryman Konstantin Zatulin presented a report on the priorities of the Russian Federation presidency in the CSTO in 2020 to the meeting participants.

Commission member, member of the Committee of the Federation Council on Defense and Security Olga Kovitidi presented the Statement by the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation on solidarity with the people of the Republic of Cuba and spoke about the development prospects of Russian-Cuban relations. The meeting participants were informed on the Statement of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, considered the draft Regulation on Partnership and Partner Status of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, and decided to amend the Regulation on the Observer Status at the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly.

The Commission members fully supported and approved the PA CSTO Draft Address to the Parliaments of the Council of Europe’s Member Nations on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Victory over Nazism in World War II.

Deputy Head of the PA CSTO Secretariat Vladimir Bondurovsky told about the progress on the draft Program of PA CSTO Activities on the Convergence and Harmonization of National Legislation of the CSTO Member Nations for 2021-2025.

On the proposal of Deputy Chairman of the Commission, First Deputy Chairman of the Committee of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation on International Affairs Dmitry Novikov, the Commission decided to organize an inter-parliamentary hearing on the developments of the international political situation in the CSTO area of responsibility, measures for further improving the collective security system and its legal support, provisionally scheduled for 18 June 2020 in St. Petersburg.
