Prevention and treatment of diabetes in the Commonwealth countries was discussed in Bishkek

In Bishkek, the summit of the diabetic associations of the Eastern European countries Unity for Good began its work in the state residence "Ala-Archa". Heads of diabetic associations of CIS member nations are expected to hold a meeting in the margins of the Summit.

The Summit focuses on the participation of diabetic associations in the implementation of the intergovernmental 2016–2020 CIS Cooperation Program for Prevention and Treatment of Diabetes adopted on 7 June2016 at a meeting of the CIS Council of Heads of Government in Bishkek. The IPA CIS Board of Experts on Public Health was a key sponsor of the Program. The implementation this program can make a significant input in counteracting the increasing incidence of diabetes.

Marina Shipulina, a member of the IPA CIS Board of Experts on Public Health, is taking part in the event. In an interview for Radio "Sputnik" she noted: "A single approach is very important throughout the CIS, with a possibility to share experiences and best practices. For example, the glucometer technology for measuring the sugar level is already 15 years old. There are methods with which you can determine the level of sugar without a drop of blood. We need to implement such methods together. For now, some places have relevant R&D, some already have production capacities, while some offer opportunities for piloting and testing."

According to the organizers of the summit, it is important to solve such pressing problems as promoting favorable conditions for patients, introducing a system for early diagnostics and combating discrimination against diabetes patients.

The IPA CIS has been working on the issues related to the regulation of prevention and treatment of diabetes since 2003. The Assembly developed a number of fundamental normative legal acts on counteracting non-infectious epidemic of diabetes in the CIS, including the model law Basic Provisions of Medical And Social Services for Patients with Diabetes, the draft CIS Agreement on Cooperation among the CIS Member Nations in Curbing the Spread of Diabetes.
