Alexey Sergeev moderates the international seminar in Baku

Today, the international seminar Election Laws in CIS countries: Improvement Pathways and Enforcement Practices started in Baku. The Seminar is moderated by Alexey Sergeev, IPA CIS Council SecGen.
In his speech, Alexey Sergeev called the development of election laws an essential element of building a sound civil society, while its steady evolution is a cornerstone of true democratic elections and plebiscites. He also underscored the importance of election laws for developing the system of governmental institutions, a strong foundation of a modern democratic society and the need to apply national specifics to the process of law-making in the field of elections. Speaking about his own experience in election monitoring he said:
We witness the development of election laws across the CIS countries driving towards openness and transparency and taking action to provide a truly free expression of popular will.
Also, Alexey Sergeev praized the work of IIMDD IPA CIS.

Today, the Institute is a recognized platform for the review and analysis of electoral processes and law-enforcement practices for the benefit of election campaigns in the CIS and beyond. It functions in close engagement with other CIS structures involved in monitoring democratic institutions, elections and referendums. IIMDD and its Offices, including the one in Baku, have been instrumental in raising the efficiency of election review mechanism in the CIS countries and became important elements of the administrative framework of integration.
