IPA CIS observers started short-term monitoring of the presidential elections in the Russian Federation

On 16 March 2018, the IPA CIS international observers are arriving in Moscow and St. Petersburg on a short-term monitoring mission at the presidential elections in the Russian Federation.

The Team consists of 40 observers including MPs and representatives of the high legislative bodies of the Azerbaijan Republic, the Republic of Armenia, the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Moldova, the Republic of Tajikistan, as well as experts of the four local branches of the IIMDD IPA CIS.

Through a decree of the IPA CIS Council Chairperson Valentina Matvienko, First Deputy Speaker of the Milli Mejlis of the Azerbaijan Republic Ziyafet Asgarov was appointed Team Coordinator.

During the short-term monitoring observers are expected to meet with the leadership of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, the Election Commissions of Moscow and St. Petersburg, representatives of the electoral offices of the candidates, as well as members of the observer missions of the international organizations.

On the election day, the Team members will visit in Moscow, St. Petersburg, settlements of the Astrakhan, Kurgan, Leningrad, Moscow, Omsk and Orenburg regions. In addition, the IPA CIS observers will monitor the elections at the foreign polling stations in Baku, Yerevan, Minsk, Bishkek and Chisinau.

The IPA CIS Observer Team functions as part of the CIS Observer Mission led by First Deputy Executive Secretary of the CIS Viktor Guminskiy. The Mission consists of more than 300 observers.
